On a farm in rural Oregon, barely an hour outside of Portland, a few thousand people (not an official number, just my non-mathematical estimation) have gathered to celebrate ten years of Pickathon—one of the region’s best all-encompassing roots music festivals. As the emcee announced between bands earlier, “We like to call it roots music. You can give that any definition you want.” In this case, the “roots music” to which they refer incorporates elements of contemporary and traditional folk music, bluegrass, old timey fiddle tunes, blues, jazz, country and rock and roll.

I don't even want to address the horse dung thing -- the music and the people and the atmosphere at the Pickathon are too good to even let something so trivial enter into the equation! This was my third Pickathon and i have to say i can't pick a favorite. Every time i go i get a whole year's worth of new favorite bands to listen to, until the next festival comes around. Keep the great times rollin'!

I had an absolutely blazing good time. There was an incredible amount of labor and love put into this festival. Yes, there are 4 elderly horses who live on the farm. They are residents. I didn't mind the horse clumps because they eat grass, no biggie. I also know how to look down before I sit or lay on the grass. It was such a trivial bit of nothing compared to how overwhelming AWESOME this festival was! Unbelievable. I'm already counting down the days till next Pickathon!

This is grass roots festival. That means a whole group of volunteers get together and donate time unpaid. The fact that the festival was as freaking great as it was in ALL respects means that one or two minor details get overlooked, such as horse dung. I personally don't mind just looking down before I sit. They eat grass. No biggee, man.

Day 1 music was great! Melissa Ferrick blew me away. I have to ask: what's with all the cow (horse?) manure everywhere?!?!? And I do mean everywhere. It's disgusting -- and it wasn't like that last year. Pendarvis and Pickathon knew people would be sitting on the ground, kids running, rolling and playing on it. And it's literally covered with animal dung. Unbelievable.
