Our first Pickathon was 2007, and I have finally found a music festival that rivals the North Country Fair (in northern Alberta, Canada: small, quirky, friendly and with enough variety to keep me happy! We loved the Tallboys, who played on the woods stage (the best stage). I sent their CD to my dad in Canada. He really liked it (I am trying to broaden his musical horizons beyond commercial C and W).I am hoping the parents will join us at the festival this year!

The Avett Brothers were the big draw for me in 2006. Each year I have been enlightened to at least one new group or new artist that makes the festival special. The Everybodyfields, Justin Townes Earle. When I got the chance to sit in on a workshop with my 4yr old little girl, who likes the music just as much, it was heavenly. The feel and the vibe at Pickathon is like no other. Looking forward to more years and watching the great line-up you provide. Thomas

My best Pickathon moment was probably stumbling down half asleep on Saturday morning in 2007 (my very first Pickathon) and happening onto Martha Scanlan playing live for the KBOO audience. I felt privileged to be one of only a few sharing it. Such a magical musical moment, and one well worth getting out of bed for. I'm so glad to have happened upon Pickathon and plan to come back as often as I can. Rinjoe - I remember being their for Martha's show when your son brought the branch down. I was worried for him at first but his reaction seemed to indicate that his dignity was the thing most bruised. It was sure a funny moment, and the band played on.

i've been to 3 years of pickathon now and i hope i never miss another one! i think my favorite memory was in 2007, late night, walking, well more like stumbling, thru the woods with a group of friends, so that mike sullivan could show us his handy work, stringing lights for miles through the woods. he was so proud. it was magical to walk down the lighted trail hearing music at every turn. i can't wait til august!

Jessie Weimar jkjweimar@hotmail.com At Pickathon 2006 I met this girl who had been hitch- hiking across the US, heard about Pickathon and came spontaneously. She had only her pack and a fiddle. We met and had great conversation. She would fiddle outside my tent in the morning, and in return I would make her coffee and breakfast. Now that was a heck of a deal, and great to meet another morning person! :) I hope she makes it back again one year. Her name is Renee and if anyone sees her tell her "coffees on"!

We've been Pickathon fans since 2005. As transplants from the South, our favorite music time there was the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Too many memories there to list. (do miss Stevie Ray, though). But now being Southern Oregon residents, finding Pickathon was perfect. Intimate, friendly, and it seems you have brought my roots music live and in person practically to my front door. I grew up in Western NC. Listened to the Opry growing up and it's so great to see this music take such a hold on people. I suppose one of the more unique memories was in 2007 when Martha Scanlon was on stage with the Stuart Brothers. They are from the little town of Canton, NC where I grew up. I yelled out "Go Pisgah (H.S.)Bears" and loved the looks on their faces. I'm sure that was the last thing they expected to hear in Oregon.

Pickathon 2007, after the Avetts closed the barn: the strum of a guitar and a the sound of a lyric called the 4 of us back to the green in what might be the best memory of Pickathon. It was 3:30 in the morning. Tom Wunderlich was sitting on the ground, wearing his GhostBusters sweatshirt, strumming his guitar and singing. Graham and another friend were there, too. Graham tossed in a background vocal every once in a perfect moment. We sat down and Tom played "When I Drink". We all sang along. A couple showed up and made out the whole time. A guy with a miniature electric keyboard around his neck took a chair and slumped there, cricket sounds coming from his instrument every once in awhile. A few others joined us, drawn to the sound like a moth to the light. Tom left us speechless with a rendition of Todd Snider's "Long Year". He had us laughing with "Ode to Pabst" and "Hobo Joe" and "Back in Texas". And when the night threatened to turn into day, we all sang along to "Wagon Wheel", shook Tom's hand and said farewell.

That is both heartbreaking and inspiring. We are very sad to hear about Greg Ross passing away, and are in a slight stage of shock hearing this news. Thank you so much for sharing, and very sorry about Greg. -Pickathon ..everyone else, we truly are thrilled with all your stories, and thanks so much for taking the time to share them.

The first time I heard about Pickathon was from my dear late friend, Greg Ross. He did promo work for the Pick for years, and I used to help him put up posters and flyer around town. I went to my first in 2006 for one night and it was a blast. I missed out on 2007, and then Greg passed away in early 2008. I referred his family to send donations to KBOO in support of the Pickathon as it was one if his favorite festivals and standard promo gigs. His sister, brother-in-law, and old friend Jenn came out from the east coast to join me and attend the 2008 Pick in part in memoriam. We had a great time, and it was wonderful that people who loved him were able to enjoy an event that he loved so much. I can't wait to go to the Pickathon this year, and I plan to attend annually! What a great festival!!

Needless to say, I've been a fan ever since. I didn't realize what a diverse fan base they have until I noticed this young 'un at Pickathon 2008.

Don't listen to bikewonder (sorry, Vanis). Most of my memories are musical, especially in the Gallery Barn workshops. However, last year gave us a new story to tell. Our family of four (plus a kid we picked up along the way) went out to the Woods stage for Martha Scanlan's set. Our seven-year old was restlessly moving around, and started climbing around in the trees, not very high, but a little off the ground. Rapt by the music, I had not noticed that he had worked his way over to the right of the stage. Martha started "Hallelujah" (a nice, quiet song) when there was a sudden "crack" to the right of the stage and I looked up just in time to see my boy belly flop onto the ground. Martha and the Stewart Brothers stopped singing, but kept playing and looking over at the spectacle as I walked over to check on him. He and I whispered back and forth a little, and he was fine. I gave the band a thumbs-up and the song continued. Afterward I went to apologize to the band for the disruption, and of course they were very gracious. At the Pickathon, we're all family...

I remember the very first Pickathon at Horning's Hideout. A small group of us (well small compared to now)went out the night before and set up for the festival. We had a potluck dinner and danced. The next morning I brought out my coffee maker and skillet. Made pot after pot of coffee and tons of pancakes. We hung up homemade decorations for the stage. It was a blast. I have gone to many after that one but I will always remember the intimacy of the first Pickathon. Thanks Zale for the vision.

I had so many great memories from last year (my first) - Daryl Anger and Scott Law on the small woodsy stage, new friends we camped near, the awesome white scrims floating in the breeze, a walk down nearby lanes, the amazing local organic food - super festival, can't wait for this years!

Sam Quinn of the everybodyfields crawled (literally) out of a spare tent in our campsite one morning and played "Tequila Sunrise" for us while we made breakfast. We're not too certain how he ended up there, hell I don't think he even knew, but we were happy have him. Talk about starting the day off, proper! Pickathon is a special place!

My family and I have been attending Pickathon since 2006, and, like cooldusty, we were drawn to the fest on a mission to see The Avett Brothers and they did not disappoint! But the Pickathon/Pendarvis vibe is really what has kept us coming back each year. We have so many great memories, like listening to the ethereal voices of the Wailin' Jennys floating throughout the farm (06), dancing to a (typical, but amazing) rowdy set by Langhorne Slim (07), and the Everybodyfields and their truly acoustic set on the Woods stage during a thunderstorm (08). We're looking forward to creating more memories this year! --Sarah

Even though in 2007 I had not heard of Pickathon yet, I had just recently fallen in love with The Avett Brothers. So yes, I made the treck from Seattle for the sole purpose of seeing them live. I was camping with my son and friends, and when we were not watching the many bands play ... his group of friends were all jaming at camp. One memorable, very late night we all wandered over to the Stage in the Woods and found it empty. So Pax, Michael & Dylan started jamin on the stage. I laid back on a bale of hay, looking up at the stars through the trees, listening to these three talented, but nonprofessional muscians play. When I finally sat up and looked around, I noticed a crowd had gathered. People were sitting on the bales behind me, listening and enjoying the music as much as I was. It was magical
