Should Pickathon Go Plastic Free? By Pickathon . 2010-05-19 . (100) comments
In 2010 we estimate the average beer drinker over 3 days of Pickathon festivities will go through roughly 7-10 plastic cups which means we are on target to consume around 20-30 thousand plastic cups in just the beer gardens alone!

We are not happy with this thought and so we have been brainstorming how we could eliminate all plastic cups as well as minimizing plastic use overall.

We would love to hear your feedback on two basic ideas that will lead us towards these plastic free goals:

Idea #1
Instead of buying a beer and recycling your plastic cup every time, would you be willing to help us reach this goal by buying a sweet, 16oz. stainless steel cup with the Pickathon logo on it that you’d be able to reuse the whole weekend? You’d pay a little more for only your first beer, (roughly $8-9 for the cup + beer), and at that time you’d receive your reusable stainless steel cup (every beer after the first would then only cost $4). You would also be responsible for keeping track of your cup and rinsing it out during the festival. We’ll do everything we can to make that easy for you, by providing some local storage in the beer gardens, making available some sort of inexpensive carrier for the cup, and providing potable water for rinsing. The payoff is twofold. Pickathon would be the first large outdoor music festival to completely eliminate all beer garden plastic cups and you get to keep your very own Pickathon stainless steel cup, forever.

Idea #2
What do you think of Pickathon eliminating the use of plastic bottled water throughout all of the festival? Instead of selling bottled water, we’d encourage everyone to bring their own water bottles. For those people who forget we would have paper cups as well as the ability to purchase a high quality stainless steel Klean Kanteen that you’d be able to fill up at numerous water stations on the festival grounds. Plenty of water would be available, it just won’t be in plastic bottles!

Organic brewfest uses a cornstarch cup that looks and is just as good as a plastic one... but it is compostable! Just a thought!

Here's a couple answers to the last few posts. The idea of stainless steel over plastic is to promote reuse over mass recycling as the energy saved in reusing something mulitiple times is significant over using plastic once and recycling it. We have always recycled all cups in the past and the total is close to 30000 cups in total. The purchased stainless steel cup will be allowed anywhere onsite for any purpose once it is bought by someone. When we say plastic cup and bottle free we only mean what will be sold at the festival everyone is encouraged to bring whatever reusable cup they want for all other drinks (I.e. Coffee, water, etc.)

2010-06-22 16:42:00

Would you have to buy a stainless steel cup for beer and stay in the garden with it or would you be able to roam around with it at the festival? Would the Kleen Kanteens be an additional stainless steel item you'd have to purchase for water? What about coffee vendors? Can you use your own cup or would you have buy a total of 3 containers to help enjoy a plastic free event?

2010-06-18 19:02:44

Have the plastic cups at previous Pickathons been recyclable plastic cups? If so, were they recycled as much as possible? Maybe having stand alone plastic cup recycling receptacles would help. Not everyone likes stainless steel containers.

2010-06-18 18:50:48

Here's a different perspective. If you have recyclable plastic cups, recycle them. Can you put a stainless steel cup in a residential recycling bin? I don't know. I do know you can with recyclable plastic cups. No waste, all reuse and recycling, no additional manufacturing required.

Reposting this thought since many folks asked about it in the latest posts - Although we solidly like the idea of folks being able to bring their own cups for the beer garden there are several problems which are likely to prevent it. The first issue is related to sanitation rules where we can't know that a patron's cup is clean when they first show up to the festival (trying to get clarification from the OLCC on this one). The second issue is that we are trying to pour exact portions of beer (little to no foam!) in a very efficient manner and having all sizes and types of cups could cause a lot of grief for the beer staff in making sure we pour the same beer each time without bringing the line to a halt. So for the sake of this discussion assume you would not be able to bring your own cup into the beer garden if we do indeed want to enable a plastic free Pickathon but we'll keep working on this too and let folks know what we figure out.

taylorsbullie4u@comcast.net
Yes,Yes and Yes! Both ideas are excellent!

2010-06-09 17:50:08

Please do both. I imagine that there's something preventing you from allowing folks to bring their own beer cup, maybe lack of a standardized size? If not, I already have a few nice stainless steel mugs/glasses and I sure don't need to use the resources required to make another, which I imagine would by far greater than what is required to make several plastic cups.

2010-06-09 15:27:26

raecouture@hotmail.com
that is a great idea and i think it would catch on and inspire other festivals!

2010-06-08 01:00:52

One more thing: not creating something is ALWAYS better. So I second the concerns about selling metal cups. While they are reused throughout the festival, if people don't need to buy them at all, (i.e. they bring their own cup) then the cups don't need to be produced at all...

2010-06-08 00:55:05

I fully support the water idea. Similarly, rather than buying a cup, I would like to be able to bring my own cup and have it filled with beer. (This should be allowed with sanitation laws if people would be drinking from the stainless cup you'd sell and then refilling it just the same way, yes?) If that isn't an option, I would support the purchase of a cup versus wasting one each time. :-)

2010-06-07 14:42:48

ABSOLUTELY! Do it - I think it is great.

2010-06-05 17:28:46

i support these ideas as well

2010-06-05 16:06:30

Plastic cups are the reason I do not buy beer at festivals, I whole heartedly support this idea. As for the bottled water, if I never see a commercial bottled water again I would not be sad. I fully support reusable items.

2010-06-05 15:15:16

I fully support both options!

2010-06-04 23:41:00

I would LOVE a stainless steel beer cup w/ a SWEET pickathon logo on it! Both great idea's!!

2010-06-04 14:35:09

fantastic ideas! both are great- pickathon is unique in being one of the most consciou and eco-friendly festival i know of. we should definitely push those boundaries a bit further- we can ALWAYS do better!

2010-06-04 11:47:06

I think it is a great idea to do away with the plastic in general; however, one concern about the beer is that it will be harder to monitor outside of the beer garden, as most people own one sort of stainless vessel or another.

2010-06-02 19:05:13

Yes good ideas! It's commendable for a festival to focus on minimizing their wast.

2010-06-02 14:22:58

LOVE ALL THE IDEAS!! as a bartender in my past life, i know all about not being able to re-use a pint glass pouring directly from the tap. What's the difference when using a pitcher? Not everyone is going to wash their cup, so instead of the germs being on the tap, they will only be on the pitcher spout, so only a couple of people will get the germs. i guess that's o.k., as long as it's not me (lol).

2010-06-02 12:48:22

judymlowder@comcast.net
Excellent! NO plastic! What about recyclable paper cups for beer?

2010-06-01 00:26:19

two great ideas!!

2010-05-31 13:05:59

Julianne.lampert@pcc.edu
~NO PLASTIC!~ I fully support the water bottle idea!!! Drinking beer out of a metal cup sounds a little gross at first, but it would look and feel like more of a connected community if we all had mugs hanging off our belts, right? And it would add to the wonderful camping vibe : ) nice thinking guys how many ounces will the mug hold.. and would people be able to bring a similar mug from home?

2010-05-31 09:31:21

I am unsure if folks here have noticed - but Pickathon have kept their beers at $4 for several years now. Go to Sasquatch and pay $9 for bud light and $11 for Molson Canadian. And you get to throw away the cup with every beer! I'd much rather pay twice as much for the beer and throw away the cup as that's seems like a way less impact than getting to keep your cup and use it through the year. Oh, and the water has always been free at Pickathon too.. Seems like we can help them out in making this goal a reality by supporting the idea in keeping plastic cups and bottles off Pendarvis Farm.

2010-05-29 06:52:33

Let's do it and set an example! Plastic is choking the planet!!

2010-05-29 05:18:15

There is a environmental factor with the metal containers though. I feel like many people get them once and dont use them again. I understand you want to make money by selling merc. but think about the effects of 7-10 plastic cups used over the course of the fest as opposed to the use of 1 metal canteen used over the course of the fest. I think the plastic will still win environmentally. I would encourage the use of people either bringing there own containers of using some sort of cup that is recyclable. At coachella this year, I was very disappointed when they wouldn't let participant fill there own water bottles. One idea I had was to give people the chance to buy a sticker for the water bottle they brought for a certain price($5 bucks) and be able to fill it up the rest of the weekend. this would save the use of manufacturing containers and be environmentally friendly as people would be using the containers they already have.cheers

2010-05-28 16:46:29

a musical festival out in ohio called ComFest (community festival) has been doin' this for a while. They use, instead of stainless steel, a giant plastic beer mug - this might be cheaper than the stainless steel?

2010-05-28 14:15:28

Don't waste time on the corn/potato garbage. Make it to last! It's not plastic free if you allow the spoilers to counter-influence the effort. Seems to me like a small price to pay to help do our part (while having a great time!).

2010-05-28 13:35:55

Pickathon
Corn and Potato based cups are still a form of bio degradable plastic and the research from many experts say that these cups are often not much better than plastic in terms of composting. So for this proposal corn and potato based cups would not allow us to meet the plastic cup free goal. However, it is likely that we could find some bio degradable corn or potato plastic cups that could compost well if folks do not want us to fully embrace the plastic free cup goal.

2010-05-28 09:42:02

two wonderful ideas! i would LOVE to participate in a PLASTIC FREE festival. is there a reason you can't do both? seems win-win to me.

2010-05-27 14:27:16

I've been to several festivals where they have switched to Biodegradable cups made of potato starch that work just as good as plastic cups. You could try that combined with encouraging people to use reusable mugs/cups.

2010-05-27 12:10:29

YES to both ideas! Ideally the beer cup is an insulated mug with a handle so folks can snap it to their belt or backpack to prevent loss...would keep the beer cold and could also be used for coffee or tea.

2010-05-26 18:36:40

You should figure out a by-the-ounce price for beer, so people can bring different sized containers.

2010-05-26 17:51:27

Compostable cups are the way to go. You could sell the stainless cups, but that seems like just more useless schwag. You could sell the compostable cups for 50cents so people would re-use them, and then toss them at the end of the day, to be composted locally.

2010-05-26 16:59:54

Or low budget, off the shelf stickers - get different color rolls of masking tape and let people write that.

2010-05-26 16:50:18

you could also have Pickathon stickers made up with blank space, let people write their pickathon superpower on it. They will remember it's their cup.

2010-05-26 14:50:05

Do it do it! I'd love to have a stainless steel beer cup from the festival.

2010-05-26 10:59:39

I think this is totally worth it! I am 100% on board.

2010-05-25 14:51:47

Yes! I am absolutely for both ideas. And I think you should suggest folks bring their own reusable coffee cups as well.

2010-05-25 13:49:58

For idea #1 and in response to comment 2010-05-19 18:25:34 You could get anyone with a dremel / rotary engraving tool to set up a stand and offer to write the owner's name into the steel cup for about $1. Sharpie stations are a great idea too.

2010-05-25 11:21:39

DO IT!!!

2010-05-25 08:29:05

PICKATHON
Again - based on OLCC law, bringing your own cup into the Beer Garden will not be allowed. Also, the cup itself will only cost $4-5, with the beer being $4. Buy the cup the first time and each beer after that is only $4. It's a small price to pay individually in order to make it work as a collective while eliminating close to 30,000 plastic cups.

2010-05-25 00:03:26

I heartily support both, but agree that it should be an option for people to supply their own beer mug if they don't want to shell out $9 for the Pickathon logo one.

2010-05-24 19:16:56

yes and yes. down with plastic! up with pickathon! thanks for being so conscientious.

2010-05-24 15:53:48

Sounds like a great idea! I would be into that

2010-05-24 12:12:35

Both ideas are great!

2010-05-24 08:42:34

PICKATHON
All the beer cups would be commemorative with a Pickathon and Widmer design on it.

2010-05-23 16:04:59

I like both ideas. I'm game.

2010-05-23 12:31:52

Will the water bottles be commemorative, or just basic Klean Kanteen style?

2010-05-22 22:26:07

kbeil@mindspring.com
Brilliant ideas! I would maybe include a carabiner with the mug, so people can just clip them to bags, etc... when not in use. Otherwise, people are going to be pissed when they lose them.

2010-05-22 20:12:46

Perfect! ~Recycling Volunteer

2010-05-22 19:16:11

I heartily endorse both options--eliminate the plastic cups and water bottles. People can buy the stainless or go without. If for whatever reason the stainless doesn't work go with the corn cups so at least they can be composted.

2010-05-22 13:59:29

melodyclaire@gmail.com
Two great ideas. Alternately, if you get a lot of push back you could offer both disposable and the reusable options. For the disposable option you could charge more (like a plastic tax). Or their are compostable beer cups: http://www.etundra.com/Cold_Cups_and_Lids-C44439.html?gclid=CIC_2fq15qECFRdSagodYBQjIg The Rose Garden Arena are using them. I could put you in touch with them to see how they like them.

hell ya thats a good idea and we all get a thing to take home with us i will think more about the less plastic use idea you guys are awesome

2010-05-21 13:16:20

Yes, please implement both ideas. I am looking forward to purchasing multiple stainless steel cups for all of us to use forever.

2010-05-21 10:17:04

Fantastic! Thanks for taking this initiative, I whole- heartedly support both of these ideas! Kill plastic!

2010-05-21 09:30:28

great idea

2010-05-20 20:44:46

Much support. Let's make it happen

2010-05-20 15:50:27

excellent. totally support ditching plactic cups and bottles. Makes for a durable souvenir as well!

2010-05-20 14:25:51

DOOOO IT. reusable beer cup great idea. i ditto some previous comments that a clip or hook on for the handle would be great so as not too lose it. i also liked the telluride bluegrass set-up, the logo'd plastic cups. i continued to reuse mine last year, both at pickathon and for a general camping cup. ditto water station.

2010-05-20 11:26:04

Indeed, a wonderful proposal and both should be utilized! If you dont provide plastic, it will not be conveniently abused, but you do provide the alternative if someone forgets their own water bottles. A great solution to icky plastic!

2010-05-20 11:22:22

Do it! We've been re-gearing the recycling for OCF and other music festivals in/around Eugene with a lot of success! Lead by example!!

2010-05-20 10:54:37

Telluride Bluegrass sells beer in higher grade logo'd plastic cups, souvenir worthy, with discounts for refills.

We also thought that every person that buys a cup should mark it with a Sharpie to help track it. Maybe we get a good range of colored Sharpies and folks can have fun with it. Alcohol should be able to remove it after the festival.

2010-05-19 23:14:22

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

2010-05-19 21:51:33

In my opinion, it seems like folks that go to the pickathon would be happy to pay an extra $4-5 to buy a reusable cup. people want to do their part in making this a green festival!

2010-05-19 21:44:23

i'm thinking that you could use a sharpie pen to write your name on the bottom of the stainless steel cup...

2010-05-19 18:25:34

I totally support both ideas! I wonder if there's some way to have a beer cup that we could personalize so if you accidentally leave it on the ground you could go back and find it?

2010-05-19 18:11:46

Pickathon
We are confident that we wil be able to figure out some sort of inexpensive cup carrier that will have a clip on it. We will give more detials out if folks do indeed want us to go down this path and we get to the point where we have the exact specs of the carrier.

2010-05-19 18:07:50

Pickathon
Although we solidly like the idea of folks being able to bring their own cups for the beer garden there are several problems which are likely to prevent it. Eco Shuttle will indeed be picking up and dropping off at the Green Line Max station this year instead of Gateway. We are working with them now on the exact details this year and will post about it soon once we figure it out.

2010-05-19 17:47:07

Pickathon
In exploring how Beer Festivals do something similar using reusable plastic mugs we have found the following guidelines that must be followed that covers reuse and sanitation requirements. Each person must be sold their own cup which they would be responsible to track and clean all weekend. We must supply potable water for rinsing, which we already do for people to drink, but we may add more. We must first pour all beer into pitchers first and then into the stainless steel cup instead of pouring directly from the taps.

2010-05-19 17:37:56

I say yes to both. Anything that limits the amount of plastic products used is a good thing. Spending 4-5 dollars for a souvenir cup is not a big deal. Saving 20-30,000 cups from a landfill is a HUGE deal. DO IT!

2010-05-19 16:12:35

sssknutson@aol.com
Have a cup that would clip or hook on your belt or purse or whatever, so that it is easily carried around. Even a plastic cup that isnt throwaway, would improve the plastic glut. Recall the Sierra Club cup that hooked on the belt. (but have straight walls, not sloped--sloped spills too easy.)

2010-05-19 16:06:57

These are both great ideas! I would buy the stainless steel cup and will bring my own Sigg for water refills! Thank you!!

2010-05-19 14:22:17

acadiavt@hotmail.com
Yes for both, and hooray for having this conversation! p.s.: Is there going to be a shuttle to the farm from the green line Max stop at Clackamas Town Center?

2010-05-19 14:05:40

I stand behind both of these ideas, for the beer and the water. It's time we up-the-ante and set a standard for festivals! Plastic cups are so 1980s, so consumeristic, and sooooo old-guard. Let's change that. For real. p.s. You should, however, be allowed to use your own cup or mug from home, and not be forced into an extra purchase of a steel mug for beer.

2010-05-19 13:26:43

Hooray and thank you! Both are great ideas!

2010-05-19 13:25:07

Both ideas are great though I do think it shouldn't be a requirement to buy the mug if someone wants to bring their own reusable mug from home. Please do both!

2010-05-19 13:23:06

sounds awesome! doo it!

2010-05-19 13:13:57

Yes, please!

2010-05-19 13:07:29

i think both ideas sound great! i would be willing to buy the mug. :)

i think both ideas sound great! i would be willing to buy the mug. :)

2010-05-19 12:03:24

This would make me SO happy! I would definitely support this. And if people know ahead of time then they can come prepared with their own cup.

2010-05-19 11:58:17

at phish festival 8 they sold logo'd water bottles. you could get any water bottle filled with filtered water for $1 at water stations, but if you bought the phish water bottle refills were free! Love the beer mug idea, though just the thought of drinking beer from a stainless steel container hurts my teeth...

2010-05-19 11:41:36

three cheers for both ideas for a total of six cheers!

2010-05-19 11:36:28

I'd be slightly concerned about sanitation, but would really want it to work! Let's go for it!

2010-05-19 11:30:46

Please do. Would be just another reason that Pickathon is the best festival going!

2010-05-19 11:21:52

Wonderful idea! Would be very happy to support both of these initiatives.

2010-05-19 11:16:01

These are GREAT ideas! I support both.
