I'm not anti-diversity. It just seems the overall quality of music is way down compared to normal.
remember when dylan plugged in and starting writing rock songs. its pretty safe to say it all turned out ok for his fanbase and his incredible legacy of music. it's gonna be alright folks.
I too feel a bit disappointed with this years lineup. Something I have always loved about pickathon is that while the lineup is always very diverse, it also seems to target a very specific musical taste. This lineup just seems to be all over the place. :( In the past, it has always felt like one big family enjoying everything together, but I feel like this year things may be a bit different and more detached from the other years. I'm still going, don't get me wrong, but I hope things return back to normal next year.
This is the most amazing lineup - so psyched to be driving over from Montana! Thanks to whomever put Ms. Staples, Richard Swift, Bill Calahan and The Sadies on the bill!!!
If you're looking for a Pickathon type atmosphere, check out the Ness Creek Music Festival north of the border. It's probably a long haul for many of you, but worth it in my opinion! For the record, I purchased passes to Pickathon and will be driving over 16 hours to join the wonderful crowd that I'm sure to find there :)
"imho pickathon is about the open mind. once you try to pigeonhole it you are sure to be disapointed. "roots music" is a term which serves an almost undefinable variety of musical stylings. many of these bands incorporate many "roots" genres into there own brew of music with an original and usually gratifying outcome. i am excited about some of my faves that are returning but i for one am stoked about the reshuffling of the deck and shaking of the sheets! here's to a fresh batch of pickathon goodness in 2011!" Amen to that!

Hey All! Thanks so much for your feedback and your own personal +'s and -'s on the 2011 lineup. Essentially it goes without saying that there are a variety of tastes out there to please, and you can continue to count on us for a mix that will evolve with the times. Our goal here is to make a mix of artists that welcomes most every type of listener - without overdoing it within any one specific 'genre'. Good music is our sole guideline, and we stand behind the choices made each and every year. For those that feel we're missing something... well, there is always next year (and the year after that, and so on). Artists grow, artists come and go, but Pickathon will always be here. Happy listening and see you this summer!
I disagree on the nosedive comment - you are obviously missing a lot there, or just have different taste, which is o.k. Great mix, can't wait. Hope the organizers hear the positives here and keep the path they are on. And you are right, nowhere in the country do you find an atmosphere like that at Pickathon.
None of the festivals you suggested have the same atmosphere as pickathon. Which is why those are An afterthought and how pickathon stands out. Even if their line up took a nose dive.
For real! If you ONLY want bluegrass - go to river city or string summit. If you ONLY want blues - go to waterfront bluesfest, if you ONLY want indie - go to sasquatch. OR, if you WANT IT ALL, by god come to Pickathon. We'll be there! Well done once again - way to dig between the cracks and bring it all out again this year. We've been every year since 2004 and things just keep getting better and better. Anyway, back to my shitty day job, dreaming of summer.
What a bunch of babies! This lineup is stellar, maybe the best yet!
I want to know why we were asked what bands we'd like to see return? The answers were pretty unanimous. I hope we get back on track next year.
I'd been so excited for this final announcement, but ended up feeling disappointed. I actually considered selling my ticket (I changed my mind). I really hope I end up being pleasantly surprised. Not that I need the same people as the past 4 years I've attended, just less of the more rock and honkey tonk vibe that seems to weigh in more heavily this year (I've listened to the lineup sample multiple times). That said, I'm excited about additions like LC Ulmer and Corinne West + Kelly Joe Phelps.
LOVE the lineup! Some of my absolute favorites, as well as lots of new bands to discover. Pickathon never disappoints! (The Sadies, Danny Barnes, Pokey LaFarge, Eilen Jewell! Wow!)
Sunday Valley?!?!?.....OMG please tell me this is the Sunday Valley from Ky!...I saw them live while visiting a friend in Louisville, Ky years back...those guys will burn it to the ground!
Really looking forward to Richard Swift, The Buffalo Killers, Sonny and the Sunsets, and L.C. Ulmer.
one of my fave aspects of pickathon is getting turned on to new artists/acts i have never heard of or seen live before. every year i walk away intrigued and inspired by fresh music and experiences. i doubt this year will bring any less.
LOVE THE LINE UP!! Every year is different and every year ends up being my favorite! Cant wait 100+ more days!
Folks, If you have been to Pickathon over the years then you know that we work hard to both excite and challenge our audiences as that is what makes Pickathon what it is. Essentially, we aim to deliver amazing live music, covering a wide swath of genres, in a world class setting. Take some time to explore much of the lineup you do not know because we are confident you will come away from this year's Pickathon loving much of what you hear, and next year we likely will have the same discussion about why this lineup cannot be repeated exactly. See you in August.
BEST LINEUP EVER!!!
Black Mountain!! Sold!! Roadtrippin down from Saskatchewan!!
Super excited, best fest anywhere around that ALWAYS brings a lineup that carries us through the year (until the next year). Way to go Pickathon! Those that are disappointed can stay home, leaves more room for the rest of us. Thanks, good night.
I agree; Not incredibly excited with the line up, but i'm ready to be back in the pickathon atmosphere.
Not excited about the line up, very excited to get back out to Pendarvis!
a little more than excited!
Honestly. A little disappointed
