Reasons for reusable: less waste, less waste, less waste By Pickathon . 2011-08-26 . (10) comments
The good news...
With an approximate 20% increase in attendance, the 2011 Pickathon ended up producing about the same total volume of waste (garbage, recycling and compost) as the 2010 Pickathon. What is even better is that 60% of that waste was not sent to the landfill in 2011 versus only 50% in 2010.

Even better news...
These numbers don't even come close to what types of waste reductions were found when looking at a per person basis.

Here is how the numbers broke down for this year:

* There was a 17% reduction in volume of total waste (recyclables, compost, and garbage) generated per person over 2010 and 38% reduction compared to 2009! I attribute these numbers primarily to the introduction of the durable cups in 2010 followed by the reusable serving plates and utensils this year.

* The volume of garbage going to the landfill dropped by 33% reduction per person over 2010 (49% reduction compared to 2009). Again, the reusable cups, plates and utensils make up a big part of this number. Substantial waste was also diverted from the landfill by helping vendors with recycling/compost equipment and frequent pick-ups.

* No change in the recoverables (recycling and compost) on a per person basis from 2010 but a drop of 27% compared to 2009. We collected 10 cubic yards (cy) of glass (say it ain't so!!), 40 cy of mixed recyclables (plastic, aluminum, and paper), and 10 cy of compost.

Well there we have it, strait from the Pickathon recycling/waste management/reusables head honcho - Jake Hofeld. Thank you Jake for this info and for an amazing team of volunteers.

And of course thank you everyone for playing the part and helping us make this a success.

We'll do it again next year...

Thanks for the replies Pickathon and Violetta. I was not necessarily intending to single you out, however it was the only place I really noticed this. But then again, I kept going to you because I do love your food! All in all, the reusable dishes, utencils, and cups were awesome and look forward to next year! <3

I was pretty inspired by this whole integrated program, and from my end, all the great eating I did of the tasty foods and all token and dishware exchanges, the whole process was simple and seamless from a consumers standpoint. Thank you Pickathon. Great numbers. Again, an inspiration.

Thank you Violetta for this explanation and we do know that you tried on many fronts to help distribute and promote the correct dishware. Admittedly, 2011 was not perfect and we already know several ways that improvements will be made. However - we do also feel that the goal was achieved and impact was made with lessening the waste that is left behind. We do not see the paper wrappers as a problem, as in some cases that was the only other option for folks who did not want to comply with the dish system. Long story short - we're not attacking Violetta as we love their burgers and connect with the ethos behind this group of folks. In 2012 we'll have solutions in place.

VIOLETTA
Speaking on behalf of Violetta, we certainly conformed to the program as much as we could. We did have some single serve items, like the burger, that are better given to the guest wrapped in our compostable wrap used at the cafe and normally on ETTA. In the event that someone ordered burgers and fries, or salad, or chili or any other item, we managed to serve in the containers or plates / dishes provided. However, even the burgers (like the burritos, and crepes, and other items served in paper at other vendors) needed to be wrapped as every single one is different or specialized by the guest and we communicate that via wax pencil on the paper to keep track. Considering it was the first year for all vendors with this new program, I think it went fairly well and nobody purposely attempted to escape participating. Finally, in regards to the compostable containers, we were informed Day 2 that if someone approached without the token, and was not going to purchase the token(s), were to serve them in the most fitting containers we had. Hope it is smoother for all next year-- and we at Violetta certainly applaud the effort to reduce waste-- it is why the concept was formed. Cheers to SLOW FOOD, FAST!

Howdy. We are taking this very seriously and are aware of this activity from Violetta. Sometimes it is hard to police as it is happening, but rest assured it will be corrected in 2012. Appreciate the feedback, and please keep it coming. We learn greatly from your firsthand experiences.

Overall, the addition of reusable dishes was awesome and we now have some Pickathon dishes for home too. But, just a bit of feedback... We went to Violetta's several times throughout the weekend for thier delicious burgers and fries, we would give them our dish tokens and then end up with our food wrapped in paper or in disposable containers and they would just give us our tokens back. It really defeated the purpose and we couldn't figure out why they weren't giving us the reusable dishes. It seemed to just be the one vendor from what I could tell.
