I was waiting for the official blog post asking for thoughts and suggestions on the festival, but it seems that is happening here. Number four for us this year. We love Pickathon! One of the best things about this festival is that you all appear to really care about our reactions and suggestions for making it better. Musically we thought this year's was fantastic! Thee Oh Sees in the Barn Friday night!!! Wow!!! Our top issues: 1. Crowd (I thought you were limiting tix sales by raising prices??? Seemed as much or more as last year. Can we get an explanation?) 2. Dust (How 'bout volunteers walking main trails - especially trail to Wood Stage - and watering them down? At Or. Country Fair volunteers use big drums with sprayers and continually walk through to keep the dust down.) 3. Main Stage Blankets (Out of control! At the end of each night it should be said that if your blanket is not up it will be collected and put in a pile somewhere. It's not right that two people swallow up a 5 x 10 foot space all the way up to the stage. Not right!) 4. Sound Check (I know it's got to be damn tough to change from band to band in such a short period of time, but man.... the Wood Stage crew seemed baffled most of the time. However, BIG kudos to Gavin in the Barn. Great guy who appears to really care about making it a great show for the artist and the crowd. 5. Last Day Toilets (They weren't serviced Monday morning. Gross and no TP. Not cool!) The Positive 1. Camp Host (Found it helpful) 2. Cart System (Like the drop site idea for big stuff) 3. The Water 4. The People (Have made so many good friends through the years.) 5. MUSIC!!!! (What a great blend this year! Something for everyone!)

The prices for a whole weekend of great music on many different stages is totally reasonable. The day pass? Not so much. Also, you shouldn't issue so many early entry tickets, as it kinda defeats the purpose. The reusable dishware and free water is fabulous! And the whole weekend is just so, so fun. But, please, oh PLEASE, not so many people next year. That was so brutally crowded.

2012-08-12 10:16:21

It was a fantastic event with amazing bands, great food, free water and good camping. BUT...the was my only year in eight that I couldn't find, and never saw (in the 4 days I spent there), a ton of friends who I know were there. It was just too, too crowded. If the (extremely dedicated and hard-working)organizers of the event cut it by 1,000 next year, I am still going to be a die-hard Pickathon-er. If not, I will miss it hugely, but just can't fight those crowds again. (And I seem to remember promises of less crowds on this blog by said organizers last year.??) ps Ignore the douchebag who went on the rich-kid rant. That's ridiculous, and doesn't even make sense. It must be hard to live your life in such misery, though, so I feel a bit sorry for that little rotten soul...

We love Pickathon! My only complaint is hearing all of the complaints. We have been coming to Pickathon since back in the day, & this is our 8th year as a family, it's tradition! And while I do reminisce about the good old days and the smaller crowds, it is still one of the most unique music festivals around. There were 3 couples and 1 child in our camp, all 9 people paid for weekend passes, all 3 couples paid for "In Your Car Camping" all people paid for early entry. We arrived early on Thurs. as advised by Pickathon, we set up camp using 3 less than our allotted (and paid for) tent sites/passes, we even moved our tents and cars several times to give more room to others. Not all of us were able to spend Thursday night out there and had to arrive on Fri. We did not save spots, we simply took up less space than we paid for. And I thought that Pendarvis & Pickathon had gone to great lengths to accommodate everyone. The free drinking water, hand washing stations, dish washing stations, showers, fair market value venders, the 3-4 days of incredible music and sustainability, and the reasonable price compared to other festivals...well, it's pretty darn special and we thank you!

2012-08-10 10:19:47

In all respects a great Pickathon! Congrats organizers, volunteers, musicians, and thanks to the Pendarvis family for hosting! A better than ever venue, well designed to handle a crowd that resultingly felt smaller than last year. A great diversity of awesome musicians. Again, wonderful folks out at Pickathon. See ya all next year!

1st time. LOVED it. Got a little hectic Saturday (maybe put Neko on the main stage instead of woods), but it was still fun and most days I had NO trouble seeing what I wanted. Great food at reasonable price, variety of music, I love bands playing 2 and 3 times so I got to see almost everyone. Free water, no assholes, high ticket price keeps the beer drinking frat boys out, super family friendly. One suggestion- leave a space for standing in front of main stages (those darn blanket hoarders). Also stop the early admission purchasers from staking spots for all their friends, it gets to look like the Rose Parade. Great job Pickathon staff!!!

Oh ya. A few more thoughts and comments. It was very hot and man, was I soooo grateful for all the water! The hoses, the guys with sprayers. Man, that was fun partaking with the best music in the background. I was so close to getting sunstroke, so thank you for that! And free water at a music festival, that's pretty rare! Usually, it's only available in bottles and costs a couple of dollars. As to the barns being so full. Yes, this is true. However, for myself it's never that much of an issue. If I enter in by the side or back it usually doesn't take long before I get a much better spot to watch and listen to the band. It all depends on my mood. I really appreciated the video screen outside the Galaxie Barn as I was not up for the crowds indoors and loved sitting outside by the fire and watching on Saturday night (with The Heartless Bastards playing). I was really surprised that the area that was once a big kids play area was now a loungey bar! I was a bit miffed by that. However, that loungey bar was very nice and as always the whole Galaxie Barn area is always one of my faves. (Tho, I missed Dr. Dog there on Sunday night. How the heck did I do that? I guess I wasn't in the best space - heat and loss of many belongings.) Small thing, but I missed all the christmas lights that are usually turned on in the barn. Why, I wondered! I do think Portland area has some of the friendliest people in the world that I have ever met! This is something that marvels me and that I greatly appreciate. Whether it's having coffee in the morning at a picnic table or sipping on a beer in the beer gardens or just gushing over extra good, special music at the main stages. Conversation always strikes up! (I miss that where I live as it doesn't tend to be like that here!) I'm not sure if there were less families and kids this year. Their presence is wonderful. One thing that surprised me was how quiet and mellow it was in the mornings. Early mornings. Anyways, thanks for all the hard work of all that put this annual event on.

I always find Pickathon Festivals mostly pretty magical. It can be intense and slightly overwhelming at times, too. There's no doubt that there's way more people attending nowadays. The last 2 years, I've really noticed it. It's still a great, heartwarming, very unique experience, tho! I cannot relate how anyone could complain about the musical talent and lineup this year. For me it was the opposite. Arriving quite late, I missed so much! But was ever so grateful for what I did get to see and hear. Tho meeting some pretty wonderful people is almost as good and rewarding as the music! However, one major bummer 'thing'!!! I either lost or had stolen my backpack full of summer clothes and personal things, and tent and sleeping bag. I'd put it down by a tree just temporarily, Saturday night, in the Staff camping area. (Knowing maybe that wasn't cool but thinking just for the moment...) While I checked about volunteering. I thought it was a rather safe place and wasn't necessarily going to camp there. Tho, I have before and was invited to. Anyways, I went back a little while later and could NOT find it! Yikes. That was pretty alarming! I thought maybe it was just because it was getting dark. And that maybe I'd remembered incorrectly where I'd put it, as I'd been pretty frazzled when I arrived. But, the next day and Monday I kept on searching and searching and could not find it! There are some who think it might be in the woods and that maybe I had the wrong trails in mind. I don't know. I'm trying to accept the loss of these things but it's quite painful! Lots and lots of favourite clothes from years and years! Not easy to replace, especially financially. So....don't know if anyone saw anything. I'd put two, bright, orange scarves over the pack and things. There was a blue tent just behind where I put my things. A little bit before in the trail was a bend and two guys had been hanging out at their tentsite. On the right side of that trail. Anyways, I guess the chances are that someone might end up showing up at a Portland area second hand store with a big bag of colourful summer clothes!!! Jeans and sweaters, too. It makes me sad, but I still had a great time! Would I do it over again, knowing I'd lose what was quite precious to me that way? I don't know. It's always a pretty incredible experience, anyways! And a huge, huge thank you to whoseever white blanket I 'borrowed' on Sunday night to sleep on and in, in the area in front of the stage! Sorry about that and thanks alot, too!

2nd pickathon for me (and family including kids) and had a great time again. Festival has evolved to include much more interesting mix of music -- highlights for me were Bombino (thanks for Bombino!), los cojolites, hot 8; though also enjoyed the more traditional americana/bluegrass stuff and rock/indy bands. Like the overall atmosphere, the relative closeness to performers vs other festivals. Yes, it's hard to get into barns, but having bands play multiple sets helps ease the pain of missing out. Maybe there's room for one more stage? Could you keep the temp in the 80's next year? Stack of tables under a tree blocked one of the only shady spots in the mainstage area all weekend. Controlling dust would be wonderful if possible. Arriving at 9 am friday doesn't seem to help much in finding a spot to camp - my campnearyourcar pass was useless. More toilet paper would be good. I also agree there was too much time spent on sound checks. Drinking beer at the Woods stage is a fine thing. Price for the full weekend is a lot but seems reasonable based on the whole experience and the fact that kids are free is great. Appreciate attention to detail, like not making me buy water, having good food at reasonable festival prices, good beer, minimizing waste. Overall, a great experience -- thanks to Pickathon staff and volunteers. See you next year...

This was my 8th Pickathon - it's just too big now! I enjoyed a lot of the music, but the hassle to fun proportion has tipped so it's not worth it for me anymore. Too much dust, not enough toilet paper, tents way too close together. So long Pickathon, it was fun while it lasted!

2012-08-08 10:55:10

This was my 5th Pickathon and it was wonderful again. The vibe is fantastic as always, the line-up was great, the organization was meticulous, thank you so much for all of your hard work. I think ticket prices are fair. It did seem that there are too many tickets sold, making it almost impossible to see a band in either barn. I spent a lot of time waiting in lines this year (food, beer, showers). If you want to sell this many tickets, I would suggest more vendors, and another stage. However, I think the true Pickathon magic happens when there are fewer attendees. Thanks for all of your work!

One bit of feedback that might have already been offered: taking the LED lights off of the crowd in the Woods Stage area--that made it really hard to navigate back out and I twisted my ankle in the trench on the upper area (saw another person trip into right after that). The lights turned down or onto the stage would've made more sense. I saw someone standing directly in their path wearing sunglasses. . .otherwise, I had a really wonderful time! Thank you! Oh, and what happened to the annual Alberta St. Pub Tuesday night this year? Very sad nothing was going on there.

2012-08-07 23:58:37

Great event, but getting too big. Also, seems like it is getting away from it's roots. Nonetheless, I enjoyed most of the bands I heard.

2012-08-07 22:52:12

I had a great weekend, thanks again Pickathon! The lineup was fantastic as usual. The food was great. The beer was delicious. Bombino! But... I have to say it seems that you were not prepared to handle the crowd that you invited. The logistics were overlooked/underestimated. Even with the apparent expanded camping it was still crowded and absolutely full when we showed up at 9am Friday. People still roping off large areas and apparently bringing in their whole groups early with only 1-2 early entry passes. Too much emphasis/reliance on your video/sound recording and webcasting. I understand wanting to embrace the tech trends and reach out for more future participants. But countless sets were delayed due to sound and tech issues which from my point of view was so that it would be perfect for the recording/webcast, not for the present audience. We paid to be there, whomever is watching the video feed didn't. Can you please keep us ticketholders at the top of the priority list? Don't overcomplicate, keep it simple. I was happy to have an encounter with a Pickathon employee late night Sunday who truly wanted to know how our weekend was and what we did/didn't like. Thank you. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the feedback and Pickathon response. I have reservations about returning for a fifth year in 2013 but I already miss Pickathon!

2012-08-07 22:01:21

Epic weekend! Thanks so much for the hopitality, friendly volunteers and smaller venues. We are from LA so it didn't feel particularly crowded. The big thing that we struggled with was dust. If the water truck can't make it through the woods stage safely because of the crowd, you might consider equiping security with small backback water sprayers for the ground. They have to walk around anyways, so why not water the dusty areas down while they are at it? All in all, it was a great weekend. Thank you so much. See you next year!

2012-08-07 17:33:23

I am ready for next year!!!

2012-08-07 14:25:43

Thanks again for another great Pickathon! Only marred by the fact that the custom and handmade hammock that my boyfriend sewed was taken from where it was hung at the Woods Stage. Maybe you or a friend mistakenly took it in a drunken stupor? If this sounds familiar, please see my post on Craigslist for pictures of this one-of-a-kind hammock and contact info for it's safe return. http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/laf/3190347940.html We thought we were doing folks a favor by putting it there for everyone to enjoy. Bummer.

2012-08-07 14:19:33

As with many things in life...Challenges add difficulty..and this weeds out the weaker links. I loved pickathon. I have kids too. We endured the heat, and the dust...our legs are sore..but our hearts and spirits are lifted from the fantastic music and gracious hosts at pendarvis farm !!!

2012-08-07 13:08:56

We have attended Pickathon for 5 years, and clearly this was the most crowded. Adding to the previous posts, the food and plate exchange was an excellent idea. We also agree that the intimate quality of the show has been lost. The barn was always too full and we had to pass. The workshop barn was too full and we had to pass. The woods stage was better, but why does alcohol need to be served nearby? Of course, no one can predict severly hot weather. Better then rain. Lastly, the music was good but not great. We listened to mainly well-known blue grass bands in the past. Where did they go? All in all Pickathon was okay this year. But, we have already discussed the fact that we probably will not go next year. Hopefully, the people that run the show will take all these ideas into consideration. thanks

2012-08-07 11:54:21

We drove 9 hours to attend this year's Pickathon. In my opinion it was not as great as previous years and lacked the easy going community feel that we loved. It was way too crowded - our group of 8 ended up in three separate camping sites after arriving at 8:30am Friday. I'm still trying to clean our my nose from the excessive dust at the wood stage. Like a previous poster I also miss the intimate feel of the wood stage. I just think too many tickets were sold. Pluses were: great food, good bands (tho not as stellar as previous years), super nice volunteers, loved the plate/token idea, gorgeous canopy of sails, bathrooms were kept pretty clean considering the number of people. Still had a lot of fun but probably won't drive the distance if the organizers continue to sell that many tickets.

2012-08-07 10:25:11

susanmoray@comcast.net
On the plus side, I love the plate recycling, the food choices, the camping, the shade structures and the prices are reasonable for all that music. Improvements could include misting the dusty ground (a la The Country Fair) is crucial. More check in people for early entry (we waited 2hours in the hot sun). If that 5000 number is correct (and it doesn't matter what it was) there were far too many people there this year. Don't know what can be done about it, but it's losing what is special about Pickathon. The sales of beer and pizza at the Woods stage is unfortunate. It no longer feels like an intimate stage but a loud bar where people stand around talking if not seated, distracting those there for the music. I hated seeing vendors hawking drinks in the audience. Jeez, can you walk 20 yards for a drink? It's a very hard event to put on, clearly, but choices need to be made and this being my 7th Pickathon, I would hate for it to be my last. I go for the vibe, the intimacy of the smaller stages, though I love the big ones at times, the family atmosphere, the camping, the yummy food and freedom to bring my own in, too. Please listen to your longtime attendees who know what this event can be like at its best!

2012-08-07 09:57:23

There seems to be many comments about the cost of the tickets. The weekend ticket at $200 for three days of excellent music is the real deal. Yes, day pass is expensive but not if you factor in how many amazing bands you get to see in one day. Our family doesn't have a lot of cake but we save up each year and make Pickathon happen - this is our fifth year. My only concern is that people are buying the Friday day pass and then staying the whole weekend. No one seemed to be checking wristbands, which made for larger crowds this year. I heard that Saturday had 5k people! Please don't go larger than this. Also, Sunday nights seem to be the mellowest. What if that day pass was less expensive so more people could appreciate the music?

2012-08-06 21:39:45

As a first timer I was pleased with the variety of acts though I couldn't see all that I wanted. The attendees were nice and civil. Too many camping passes were issued resulting in lots of folks camping in appallingly slanted or dusty sites. Whoever thought concert goers liked bright lights shined into their eyes as they tried viewing the acts was mistaken. I imagine the festival would be even more pleasant if it weren't 100 degrees. Lastly the two barns accomodate a lucky few who can enter and then there are those who hang out outside and many others who just give up and head elsewhere.

2012-08-06 15:02:46

The price of this show excludes so many people who would like to go. It's a bummer. Sort of ironic for a show rooted in folk music.

2012-08-06 14:57:33

Our 6th year was a blast as always. I personally would never pay that much for a single day, but for a full weekend its an extremely good value for a perfect family vacation so close to town. Its like checking into another world for 3 days and always coming back with a handful of favorite new bands. You need to install water misting where trails converge at Woods stage. Not getting half the money back on the plates changes that whole deal for us though. Only real complaint is that there is not enough shade in the best area between the main stages. It ends up being a big void in prime area and bad for fans and artists playing there. Great job on music selections, again.

2012-08-06 14:00:42

Please ask those who came (and have come for years) for feedback about this year's festival. Much to salute, much to lament.

2012-08-05 09:17:11

$235 vs. $40 .... Yes Portlanders would love to support this fest, but it's way too expensive. $235 for my wife and I to take our little kids on Sunday and park. Oregon Country Fair $40. I've only been because I volunteered, so I know what the Pickathon offers. It's not that special that I'd feel like paying half of what they are asking. But I think Portland would embrace the festival if the organizers could manage to make it affordable, even if it was one cheap day tagged on to the rest. AND can you put the ticket prices on the "Tickets" page? Why do I have to look for find them on this "Blog" page?

2012-08-04 22:44:20

It's really psychedelic tonight!

2012-08-04 20:37:05

The "directions" you provide SUCK. The only reason I found this overpriced (I've never heard of ANY band listed) circle jerk of smugass gentrified hippie wanna-bes was the sun reflecting off hundreds of cars. I wish you had explained on this site that $110. is the price of entry, not a camping fee. I would have laughed and moved on instead of driving out there to figure out how to proceed. Something like "No really, we want $110 dollars to attend a dusty, dirty, music fest that was ten bucks and a can of food for bands you've actually heard of on the beauty of a riverfront last month. wow. You got me good.

2012-08-04 16:54:22

All my friends agree that the blue LED lights at the Wood Stage become distracting and annoying as it gets darker. Just sayin'.

2012-08-04 15:10:43

elissa.pfost@gmail.com
how does one find out if there are walk-in tickets for sunday only?

2012-08-04 14:22:19

What I notice about the heat is the silence of people breathing of dogs lolling their tongues of children too limp to whine. Not me. I'm not splayed on the cool wood floors soaking up the basement. I'm putting on my dancing shoes and my lighter-than-air clothes and heading to the Pickathon.

2012-08-04 14:08:42

thebulldawgbite@yahoo.com
I'd love to come to P'thon, but really, is it $110 for a ticket for Saturday? It's 2pm and I just can't see paying this for my wife and I...

2012-08-04 02:46:36

I can hear this going on from my bedroom.

2012-08-03 14:41:33

Where do I buy $15 ecoshuttle tickets? Is there a place to park in Clackamas? Is it still possible to get park near your car passes? My partner, who I am coming with, has a broken leg and is concerned about having to walk a long way to camp. Or do you have any park in your car passes for people who are mobility challenged?

2012-08-03 09:11:09

I remember being on the Board of KBOO in the '90s...some locals asked for a start-up loan. They called it "Pickathon"

2012-08-02 22:41:18

Also your kepx.org and paste magazine links are impossible to find the live stream on. Maybe they'll post it when the music starts?

2012-08-02 22:30:26

Hey stumptownbliss.net is the link not .com FYI.

2012-08-02 22:29:39

Just how many people bought early tickets? I hope there will still be some good camping spots.
