2013 TICKETS and Lineup Announcement Info By Pickathon . 2013-02-15 . (69) comments
First thing first... The 2013 Lineup curtain will be raised next Wednesday February 20 and that's the day we will finally get to show you the many reasons why we are so excited about 2013. There will be several surprises and we just can't wait to share this news.

We also have important info about buying tickets and vehicle passes for 2013 Pickathon, but before we dive into the details, we wanted to reaffirm our commitment to capping our audience size in order to give everybody the elbow room they've come to enjoy. For those of you who have been following the dialogue about keeping our crowd size small, you know to expect some price increases this year. But considering the musical lineup and enhancements to the overall experience, we think the value, especially when compared to other festivals around the country, is one heck of a bargain.

Ok, now on to ticket details for 2013....

We have three notable changes from how tickets and vehicle passes have been sold in the past:

1. We were concerned about tickets and special vehicle passes selling out quickly, and so we have made a decision to give first priority for 2013 tickets and vehicles passes to our 2012 paying audience, followed by our wider email list and newsletter community. What this means is that those who bought tickets last year will receive an early one-day email opportunity to purchase weekend tickets and vehicle passes starting Monday February 18. Next, on Tuesday February 19 we will send another notice to our wider email list and newsletter community for a second early opportunity to buy tickets and vehicle passes. After that we will be opening our tickets up to the general public on Wednesday February 20 when the lineup is announced.

2. The very limited "specialty" vehicle passes are always the first items to sell out. We will make 50% of the RV, Car Camping, and Camp Near Your Car Parking passes available to those early-opportunity folks, starting on Monday. Then we will offer the other 50% that remains available when tickets and vehicle passes go on sale to the general public on Wednesday.

3. There will be no early prices for the first tickets sold this year and we will not have any type of tiered pricing in 2013. Instead, there will be one consistent price for each ticket type (admission and vehicle passes) that will stay the same for as long as tickets remain available.

Providing early access to tickets and specialty vehicle passes is our way of honoring those of you who come to Pickathon year after year. While we can't guarantee that these items won't sell out quickly, we do want to ensure that festival veterans are the ones getting the first shot at what's available.

Stay tuned and get ready folks... Summer is coming and the big news is just days away.

" quality of life at Pickathon is worth the extra cost." Suckin' down dust looking for a crooked slope to put a down a tent next to a filthy Port-a-John. Venues so crammed you can't see the music you paid for. Sorry pal... not enough "quality" for those prices

2013-02-26 01:55:59

Bonnaroo IS about the same price, that's true. Sure, big artists go there. Enviable lineup, including some that are playing Pickathon. -And it's in the middle of nowhere Tennessee...vs right outside Portland. -And they have 80,000 to 100,000 attendees...vs 3,500 (to 5,000 with volunteers) With those last points in mind I'm honestly not sure the comparison is valid. For me the quality of life at Pickathon is worth the extra cost.

Jeff@harmony
Hey Everyone, Even though I've never paid to attend a Pick (staff), I really believe its the most special event I've seen. Some things in life you can't pay enough for. Just the fact the children are very safe here at a Festy(!) to me, it's worth price of admission. The higher price, let's face it, keeps certain knuckleheads on the sidelines and I have no problem with that. This is an A+ event and should be priced accordingly.

2013-02-23 19:26:41

Hey, can you make sure that the Clackamas County Sherriff stops arresting Pickathon attendees for HASH possession this year? Fucking lame! Nobody should be charged with a felony for a tiny amount of hash!!!

2013-02-23 10:29:14

Frickin' Bonnaroo is cheaper...Paul McCartney, Mumford and Sons, Wilco, Lumineers and a billion others. Just Sayin...

2013-02-22 20:18:55

Will the camping situation have been improved? If you show up Friday Noon will the campsites be already filled?

2013-02-22 10:12:31

Be honest now Pickathon. $190 was not the price for the early ticket purchase last year. Early ticket buyers got a discount for being veterans and buying before the lineup was announced. Now there's no discount for either of those things.

2013-02-21 23:22:03

It's pretty rich that those three folks below that are bailing for that other fest are going pay approx 150% more than they did last year...

2013-02-21 12:54:32

Read the chat with Zale that was held today on the Oregonian site: http://www.oregonlive.com/music/index.ssf/2013/02/pickathon_live_chat_11_am_thur.html#incart_m-rpt-2

2013-02-21 12:53:12

It's a shame that the 15th Anniversary of the festival has to come at the price of losing some of what helped it get there in the first place.

2013-02-21 09:10:48

Coachella and SASQUATCH may have the BIG headliners, but they also have HUGE crowds and everything is extremely overpriced, and when you go to leave those festivals, they resemble a Landfill. PICKATHON you have, room to breath, great music, and when it is over, it is cleaner than you could believe. And I can at least feel that my money is going to good things at PICKATHON, but I can not say the same for larger more corporately sponsored festivals. Also, this festival has been happening for 15 years now, so you know it is coming every year, basically, it can not be that hard to save a couple hundred dollars through out the year. And if it is, then, well you are in a sad state of affairs mang. See some of you in August, it will be AWESOME!

2013-02-20 19:19:23

Is the ticket price unreasonable? Well, did you buy a ticket? Then it's not unreasonable. Supply & demand, folks. You vote with your wallets.

2013-02-20 16:23:58

30% of 190 is $57. The price has increased 37% ($70). just saying... That's a $115 increase in two years. (up 79% since 2011) I'm excited to come and be a part of something beautiful and I'm bringing friends for their first time -- but those are harsh numbers.

2013-02-20 16:01:19

PICKATHON
Many independent music festivals are started and maintained for several years with a huge dose of sweat, dreams, perseverance, anguish, and luck. As time goes by these independent festivals either burn themselves up or manage to transition to something longer lasting. Pickathon is squarely in this transition as we speak and we have no qualms about sharing our journey. Pickathon's financial goal is to remain nothing more than independent and sustainable over the long term. In practice this requires that we plan out the real costs for retaining the people, land, and infrastructure well into the future. We are carefully trying to ramp up to these costs over time so as to balance innovation in bringing costs down against the ability to install confidence in our internal organization that Pickathon is worth committing their long term time, energy, and resources to. The bottom line is that we are making this transition because we love what we do and feel strongly that the struggle to deliver people's favorite musical experience of the year is worth the effort. Again, we don't expect everyone to agree with all the choices we've made, but we do hope you appreciate the dialogue on what our reality is and how it can or cannot change in the future. P.S. Since weekend ticket cost increases numbers were being discussed we thought we should clarify that our final weekend ticket price increase was similar to the previous year (~30% 260 vs. 190 in 2012 and ~30% 190 vs 145 in 2011).

2013-02-20 13:44:52

Pickathon peers also sell bottled water for $5 and have stages sponsored by Ax Body Spray and Vitamin Water.

2013-02-20 12:13:55

Below comment --- If Pickathon continues to raise the prices this much every year -- the crowd will change (as it is right now) and so will the "Aura" that we all love. defeating the purpose or paying more.... It's not about having or not having the money. It's justifying spending that much money on a music festival that appears to be becoming less music focused.

2013-02-20 11:54:12

Yeah but I'm sure their "peers' also have 20x more people at their festival. Pickathon is easily one of the best weekends of the year, every year, to me that is priceless. I'd rather pay $260 and have a nice, intimate festival with plenty of personal space than just another festival that tries to pack as many people in there as possible and you can barely move. Not to mention the ridiculously long lines for everything at big festivals. And it's more than just the lineup and crowd size, the whole place has an aura and is just really special. If you've been there, you know that. I think it's sad that so many people are not coming bc of the price increase, I mean it's 6 months away, if you can't come up with another $120 in 6 months you have some serious money management issues. I love this festival enough that the price is irrelevant, and if you're not willing to cut other unnecessary stuff out of your budget to save an extra $20/month for the next 6 months then you really don't care about the festival at all.

2013-02-20 11:16:13

your "peers" also have a WAY WAY WAY stronger line-up than you do this year.

2013-02-20 11:12:22

Really disappointed with the line-up. You guys are getting distracted. We all come to a magical MUSIC FESTIVAL. If you doubled your attendance and cut your price in half you would still be expensive! Festivals get big because the same number of people cannot continue to carry your sustainability costs. Time to move the festival or re-evalute where your costs are coming from. Really upset over here. The weekend will be fun and beautiful but we all know that you are grossly overpriced this year. YOU NEED TO CHARGE SOMETHING FOR CHILDREN.

2013-02-20 10:20:40

Are you saying crowd density will be less than last year? Cuz it was crazy crowded last year. I hope the increase in price mitigates this.

2013-02-20 09:50:20

Lineup! Lineup! Lineup!

2013-02-20 08:43:00

I laugh in your general direction. You do realize your ticket prices are only $100 less than Coachella and Sasquatch? Those are two amazing festivals. You better be bringing in Wilco, a reunited Son Volt and Johnny Cash from the dead with these prices.

2013-02-20 08:03:35

I guess I don't understand what has changed since last year that is driving ticket costs up 57%. Unless you are saying that Pickathon took a major loss the last couple of years.

2013-02-19 20:53:36

PICKATHON
The main two issues driving ticket prices are the low crowd density (2-5x lower than our peers) and our to need to gradually finance the real long term hard costs related to making Pickathon sustainable for the long term. Bands play a smaller role in the overall cost equation. If you wanted one simple comparison of how cost effective we are to our peers you only need to understand that if we doubled the crowd the ticket prices could be roughly cut in half. It's that simple. The good news about being an independent national music festival making highly unusual choices is that we like to be upfront and discuss these issues to try and find new ideas as we go along. The one thing we can't do is change the cost reality for any given set of choices, and that is where we find ourselves today. We apologize to the folks who do not agree with the choices we made related to capping crowd size. Next year we will revisit this issue to make sure it is still the right choice.

2013-02-19 20:42:06

"Out on the road today I saw a [Pickathon] sticker on a Cadillac..." Add me to the list of long-time supporters who have officially been priced out. Sad to see it go.

2013-02-19 20:38:49

Didn't you sell us on a price increase in order to keep the festival to a manageable size? I don't remember being asked if I would pay more for bigger acts.

2013-02-19 20:36:01

57% increase in ticket price!!! That's egregious! We're moving to the Willamina music fest for $30.00 (includes camping) and hoping they grow more responsibly.

2013-02-19 19:06:01

Been searching the internet for ticket prices of other festivals around the country and there really aren't many in this price range. The lineup better be mind-blowingly good or else I'm finished with Pickathon. It was fun while it lasted, see everyone at the Willamina Wildwood Fest.

2013-02-19 17:44:28

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Are you kidding me with this price? No way are you worth that. Sorry. It was my son's first festival when he was little but I'll be taking my daughter to her first festival somewhere else. Enjoy your exclusivity.

2013-02-19 15:33:37

You guys work hard and do a great job. You're making the tough decisions, and in making those, you're going to rub some folks the wrong way. But hang in there, keep up the good work, and know that most of the community appreciates you and what you do. Thanks, and can't wait to see you in August!

2013-02-19 14:23:45

If you can't afford the extra 100 bucks it cost to get in i have some helpful suggestions! 1. Buy less weed/alcohol 2. Second Job (Perhaps first job) 3. Don't take the whole fam, (i am sure a babysitter is cheaper than the 1-2 extra tickets.) i think if y'all put your minds to it, there is no telling how high you can fly! (just dont get high; see tip #1)

2013-02-19 14:15:07

Pickathon, thank you thank you for listening to us a few years back when the majority of the feedback was to raise the ticket prices to keep the crowd low. Although the amount of the price increase was a bit of a surprise, ultimately you're doing what we asked for and I thank you for that. Besides, Pickathon is a priceless experience, year after year.

2013-02-19 13:43:36

I just bought tickets begrudgingly, after reminding myself that Pickathon has always been the highlight of my summer the past few years. However, I would rather have seen one of two things this year: 1) At this ticket price, let past ticket buyers know who the lineup is and let us have the chance to buy before opening it up to the general public. That would seem to offer the best value to past Pickathon-goers. Buying sight-unseen without a discount sucks. or 2) Increase the price a little, keep the acts roughly the same caliber, and just cap the audience, giving past attendees first crack. I think that's what most past Pickathon-goers would have wanted. It's usually the discovery of new up-and-coming acts rather than big headliners which provides the value to me.

2013-02-19 13:07:14

Hear, hear! And you really should ration the kids' water!

2013-02-19 11:18:51

jessmmiller777@gmail.com
I went last year and plan on going this year but I have a bad taste in my mouth and this will probably be my last Pickathon -- And I'm pissed about it... I wanna be able to keep coming forever! Before you up the cost for the rest of us 30% and charge us half a soul to set up a day early you should be charging $20 a kid. Or reduce the free kid age to 7. I love that it is family friendly but it's not right to saddle the rest of us with an already high ticket price with the cost of this perk. Charge $20-$50 for 8-12 year olds (who are old enough to enjoy the music) and increase our prices less. This isn't Sasquatch and no-one wants it to be... Also, why are you waiting so long to release the Lineup? If your going to charge Big Festival prices give us the justification before we cough up $260-$400. Why are you making this so frustrating?!

2013-02-19 10:43:52

Jeez. Maybe some of us walk around with our eyes closed while at Pickathon? Beyond the music, this is the best it can be, bottom line. I gladly welcome smaller crowds, interesting lineups, and a place for our family to have our cherished once-a-year vacation. Kids are free, food is great and priced accordingly, micro-brews are $4 a pint. Thank YOU Pickathon. Can't wait until lineup announcement time!!

2013-02-19 10:12:53

also to add to my last comment I never received an email to buy tickets and Ive gone the last 3 years... so heres a former devoted pickathon fan who is doubly annoyed

2013-02-19 10:10:50

Im sorry but every year you increase the price it just makes my friends and I feel like you are starting to cater to a different crowd. Last year was bad enough (Dubbed TICKATHON) You should just cap your capacity and keep the lineup humble. Very disappointed

2013-02-19 09:55:44

Dumb the line up down and decrease the price. This was our annual friend trip and I doubt any of us will go this year. (we've gone for 6 years straight) It's really sad, I never wanted this festival to get huge headliners and end up costing the same as other festivals. I can afford it, but it's the principle of it. I don't think the loyal goers of pickathon wanted the expansion of crowds and huge bands. Guess money always rules

2013-02-19 09:47:03

slorimer3@gmail.com
I bought tickets the past 2 years and didn't get an email yesterday. What gives?

2013-02-19 09:30:10

I just bought my ticket begrudgingly. I know it is worth it...the new price however is extreme. 30% increase is too much. I am curious where this extra money is going? Guess it is a wait and see.

2013-02-19 09:25:49

2013-02-19 01:21:22

2013-02-19 00:57:29

quit yer bitchin'. we'll have fun without you. still the best fest out there bar-none.

2013-02-19 00:41:30

Really Pickathon? 260 bones? Thinning out the crowd by pricing out half your previous attendees? I always thought part of the magic was the community and accessibility. Feeling a little less than enthusiastic. Bummer.

2013-02-18 22:41:04

This was announced as "some price increase"? That's rich. What a shame. Pickathon has been one of the highlights of my family's summers for many years, but I don't think we can swing this. Maybe when you do your annual post-mortem you might conclude you're pricing has excluded a lot of people that have enjoyed your festival. Maybe not. Anyway, have fun.

2013-02-18 21:12:17

If this dramatic price increase is to cover the cost of bigger acts then you've lost me. My family doesn't go to Pickathon to see the Rolling Stones. We go to get turned on to the new and interesting music that you guys have unearthed every year in the past. We'll save our $1,000.00 and head to Willamina. So sad.

2013-02-18 18:43:08

I appreciate the first shot at tickets. I also had some pretty significant sticker shock. If the payoff is some amazing big-name headliners under circumstances I never would have otherwise been able to see them, it might be worth it. If it looks a lot like last year but for the same price, I will be disappointed. At the end of the day, price is one of the defining aspects of a festival on both attendee and producer side, and it will be interesting to decide what Pickathon has chosen to be going into its 15th year. So far I've been given amazing experiences that give me faith that it will all be worth it, and I hope I'm not disappointed.

2013-02-18 17:14:44

PICKATHON
Our thoughts around the early ticket buying was twofold. Focus on last year's ticket buyers to give them the first shot at the limited amount of special vehicle passes and to make sure we avoid a worst case scenario where we open up tickets to the general public they sell out so fast much of our loyal community is left out. The latter situation seems to be a reoccuring issue this year for many other similar festivals which is causing a wake of hard feelings that we wanted to avoid.

2013-02-18 16:23:24

Ticket purchased, thanks for the heads up.

2013-02-18 15:01:47

We're going, and we're by no mean trustafarians. We just consider Pickathon our family vacation. As for buying before the lineup is announced, it's a leap of faith, and I know I won't be disappointed. Thanks for the early opportunity, P-thon!

2013-02-18 14:17:51

We were sticker shocked at how much the ticket prices have gone up this year. We were hoping to attend this year again with family and friends and you've essentially prices so many people out of this event. I could understand $50 dollar increase, but $110? That seems a little excessive and the parking is an over reach. We need to decide if paying $600 to $750 for a couple is reasonable when we don't even know who the line up is yet. That's asking a lot and delivering nothing in return, including your assumption of giving returning guests the chance to buy tickets before everyone else has.

2013-02-18 13:08:40

Pickathon, I think you've mishandled this one. It seems the only real advantage offered to prior attendees is the ability to pay more for tickets before even knowing the lineup. I've always bought early tix before, knowing it would be good, but the privilege of early purchase doesn't really make up for the jump in ticket price. will have to wait and see what the lineup is, but it certainly doesn't feel there's much reward for loyalty here. May be priced out this year.

2013-02-18 12:44:44

Pickathon is my favorite festival in the Pacific Northwest, and one of the few I still go to. Our family and Pickathon friends were bracing ourselves for the ticket increase (what we imagined would be up to $50 more per person) but were deeply saddened to see how much we underestimated. I understand the insane amount of work and and volunteer hours it takes to make a festival like this happen. Nevertheless, our family, and our Pickathon family has to bid farewell to this festival. This is a very sad day for us, as I am sure it is for many others as well.

2013-02-18 12:19:16

PICKATHON
We do understand the ticket cost impacts will prevent some of our long term families from attending which makes us sad. Unfortunately, we are in a "is what it is" situation that is based on being an independent festival with a unique set of choices related to experience and sustainability. One constant you count on is that we are always aiming to be nothing short than your favorite musical weekend of the year, and so given the complex realities of how to make make lighting in a bottle happen we have decided the best path for us is to try and make the right choices and be straight up and open to dialogue.

2013-02-18 12:19:08

Are Early Thursday Entry tickets required for kids 12 and under?

2013-02-18 11:38:28

Well that's that... Too rich for us. Goodbye Pickathon

2013-02-18 11:17:08

$600+ for a couple tickets and a parking pass? Come on...get over yourself Pickathon. Unless your headliners are bigger acts than Neko Case and The War on Drugs, you can't possibly feel you're setting up the Pickaton 'family' at that price.

2013-02-18 11:03:45

ktmcquinn@gmail.com
Hello Pickathon and Pickathoners. How does this early ticket sale work? I bought tickets last year and was hoping to do that again today. Was I supposed to receive an email?

2013-02-18 10:57:01

Are you serious!!! You raised the ticket price $100. I guess this will be the first year in the last 10 that our family won't be coming! Have fun.

2013-02-18 10:46:18

PICKATHON
There is no conspiracy against Day Tickets just a conscious choice to prioritize weekend tickets within our self imposed boundaries of keeping crowd density extremely low. We may indeed still provide a limited amount of Day Tickets later this Spring, but at this point we can't say for sure, and we would advise against counting on this to happening.

2013-02-18 09:32:53

Once again no single day tickets?!. along with all the other festivals my family will not able to enjoy because the pricing for a family of three is almost $600. i guess festivals are now just for the elitists, credit card hippies and kids using their student loan money.

2013-02-18 00:18:42

PICKATHON
Buying any special vehicle pass is independent of buying a weekend pass. Kids 12 and under are indeed encouraged and free. There will indeed be shuttles from the Green Line Max station.

2013-02-17 21:32:54

Do we need to buy the weekend pass first in order to purchase an early-entry or car camping pass? Thanks!

2013-02-17 18:27:41

naturebroad@gmail.com
I hope the previous poster meant kids will get in for free, instead of kid-free. If it's the latter, how exactly does having kids attend spoil your enjoyment? Is it their hula hooping, their misting people with spray bottles, their joyful running, crafting and singing? Or maybe your party high is just being bogued... I hear Burning Man is around that time.

2013-02-17 17:31:44

Will it be kid free this year? Please!!!!!

2013-02-16 16:43:28

PICKATHON
Howdy, Here's the answers to the two comment questions. Yes there will be a shuttle, and all ticket prices will be announced on Monday to the early ticket buyers and the general public on Wednesday. Have a good weekend.

2013-02-15 16:33:11

Will there be a shuttle from town again? Please!!!

2013-02-15 15:49:03

Will you announce pricing before the sale date?
