What a weekend! Where's Marty?

All we can say is wow!

Anyone who attended Pickathon this year knew they were witnessing something special.

Don't get us wrong, there were challenges (i.e. super hot weather), but the non-stop inter play between the audience, Pendarvis Farm, and the artist's countless inspired performances definitely dominated the weekend and the feeling seemed to get stronger each day and night.

Over the next couple of weeks we'll be sharing a lot of Pickathon 2009 video, musical, and other related content and thoughts. We also are putting together our annual Pickathon feedback survey that we will use as an opportunity for folks to tell us what they liked and didn't like.

Since the festival is so fresh in everyone's mind we wanted to kick off the post festival updates with a call for people to share their own Pickathon stories in the comments section below or you can email it into us at info (at) pickathon (dot) com. It would be great if everyone could leave an email in the comments section as we looking at putting together a magazine documenting the weekend and would like to include people's stories as part of it.

We'll start this thread by providing a bit more context for one of the funnier stories we we're involved in during the weekend that most people have heard about.

Where's Marty?

Soon before Blitzen Trapper was to play onstage on Saturday night in the Barn the band realized Marty Marquis was mysteriously and uncharacteristically missing. There was general concern because no one could imagine what had happened to him as he is usually the first one to be anywhere.

The Pickathon SWAT team was called to action and so the search began.

The main theory being used by the search team was that because of mass touring and messed up biological clocks he had to be asleep in a tent. Now all we needed to do was find his tent in the dark among one thousand other tents spread over 80 acres on 2 miles of trails.

So just like that band members Eric Earley and Erik Menteer jumped in the hunt with Pickathon staff Brian Walsh and Zale Schoenborn by going out into the dark woods looking for Marty's tent.

Meanwhile....

Pickathon security was called into action to keep a lookout for a tall, curly redhead with a rattail named Marty . They immediately started patrolling the grounds trying to find anyone that fit the description.

Michael Dorr (our hospitality guru) went searching all areas of the venues seeing if by some chance he was lost or tied up by gnomes.

Countless other staff members also started fanning out to specific locations looking everywhere possible to see if they could find him.

Some staff members remained back at the Galaxy Barn which was growing restless as the starting time was now getting pushed back by over 30 minutes longer than advertised.

During all of this everyone who was talking on Pickathon radio (channel 9) started having a very surreal feeling of being a part of a TV search and rescue drama.

Back in the woods...

Eric Earley and Brain Walsch took the lower trails down by Quail Trail and Woods stage and Erik Menteer and Zale Schoenborn started with the upper trails close to the logging road.

The whole search felt like a black comedy as every couple feet there seemed to be a possible tent candidate that required us to call out a loud "Marty Marquis are you there"?. This was either followed by a "sorry but we are looking for someone who is lost" or a detailed description of him (tall, curly red hair, rattail, and some other random humorous observations). Along the way some additional audience members offered to join in our collective search team, and promised to escort him back to the Galaxy Barn if he was found.

Eventually, it was decided that Brian and Eric should head back to the barn so Eric could start playing some music while Zale and Erik continued to search for him in the woods.

The Barn continued to get restless and this is the only part of the story we regret. There was not good communication from the search team back to the Galaxy Barn on what should be announced to the audience. So this translated to our MC (Jeremy Peterson) being put in the awkward position of having to placate a hungry restless bunch of music lovers with very little real information about what was going on. In hindsight we should have simply had Jeremy Peterson standing on stage, with a radio, giving a blow by blow update of the search report as that would have been hilarious and made for some serious shared drama.

Zale and Erik continued to search in vain laughing at funny moments along the way such as stopping in a mid jog at the beautiful lighting at the woods stage to notice "Ooooooooo...That's pretty cool". The search continued at hurried pace that essentially turned into a serious workout as they ran up and down trails and started to feel overwhelmed at the sheer possibilities of where Marty's tent could be.

After much debate between the search team Erik eventually decided to call Marty's sleeping wife. It was judgment call between leaving a worrying message saying "Your husband is missing" and hoping she might call back with the key clue that would lead us to find Marty.

The clock struck 1:45AM and still no Marty. A feeling of "oh crap" started to sink in between the short breaths caused by jogging up hills and the sense the barn was getting more and more restless.

Our lucky break came at 1:48AM when the radio crackled with "Marty's in the Barn! I repeat. Marty's in the Barn!".

Erik and Zale squeezed out an exhausted laugh which was followed by a quick check of the shoelaces and an immediate sprint along the length of the logging road back to the Galaxy Barn. All the way they kept talking on the radio wanting to know exactly where Marty's tent was along with wondering what people might be posting on Twitter based on their viewpoint of this crazy search.

The story ends with Erik dashing through the beer garden, jumping up on stage, and joining in the middle of "Furr" which was the beginning of an inspired 45minutes of musical magic.

So now that you know what happened, let us share why it happened.

It seems the key culprit was that Marty got his first massage backstage at Pickathon this year. The massage was deep and worked out a bit of road toxins and rough knots in the body. Marty then drank a gallon of water walked up to his tent and the next thing he remembers is waking up in pure darkness, running down the trail towards the light light, and walking right on to stage.

Now it is your turn to share your stories with us.

I was dead center 3 back from the stage and man did I feel for that poor MC. I thought the crowd could have been a tiny bit more empathetic, but you're right, communication would have helped. Some of the impromptu performances were pretty funny, especially the joke the girl told about the difference between Jam and Jelly... When I stumbled back to my tent at the junction of the Coyote Cutoff and the Logging Road around 4 am to my wife and sleeping toddler she told me of being awoken to this chorus of people on one of the carts shouting "Maaarttttyyy! Maaarrrtttyyy!" and then hearing crackling over someone's walkie "He's in the barn... I repeat... He's in the barn!" When Marty took the stage he was asked what happened and all he could muster was "I'll tell ya 'bout it tomorrow. I'm still trying to process it all." It was pretty funny, more so now. It will surely be a funny memory for the band. By the way, that set kicked ass! Erik Menteer is one hell of a player, and after everything w/ Marty the man sure hit some beautiful harmonies. Good good times!!!

I also would again like to thank everyone who helped make this fest possible this year. I have never done it before and I promise I will never miss it again. From the first step passed the fence it was "Welcome, come have some fun!" How can we help you with that???" Just a tremendous vibe. I also came w/ my 3 year old who absolutely didn't want to leave he was having so much fun. Oh, and Pendarvises... I passed you on the logging road w/ my wife and son and said hello. I didn't realize you were who you are or I would have given you on hell of a big, warm hug of thanks!

I was a late arrival on saturday around dusk. My friends had already experienced so much. I soaked in the vibe at the beer garden and listed to a voice that was a cross between cab calloway and tom waits. Quite brilliant. Set ended and another cold beer. In the darkness a lost soul can't find her way out of the beer garden, she's frantic. 'John Doe is in the barn!'she shouts. My jaw drops, my heart leaps, I am the most surpised person in the world and I'm moving fast toward the barn. JD is my personel Dylan. From the Whiskey in LA to Noe Valley Music Series I always made a effort to see him and now on this perfect night in this perfect place I found him again. The Barn was hot, the crowd hotter and JD and the Sadies raised the roof like it was a hot air ballon. We flew, the whole joint together. John Doe, the Goode brothers and that smoking rhythm section could power a city and trust me they did. dingo

This was my first trip to Pickathon I have wanted to go for several years but august is always a busy month and just didn’t make it I say that Jon Doe and Dale Watson was on the roster so I decided to make it this year an bought the pickers package. I had met a woman at the Country fair named Megan who was also going to Pickathon she told me she would be working at the merchandise table and I told her I would stop and say hi, and I did. Sometime on Sunday I found an earring in the dust in front of the main stage and hung it from the neck of my shirt and didn’t think to much about it after that. After Blitzen Trapper played on Sunday night (loved the band by the way) I decided it was time to go home I wanted it to last forever but all good things come to an end. As I was leaving I saw Megan talking to some people so I tapped her on the shoulder to say good by and it was nice to have met you again. As we were exchanging goodbyes her eyes went from my face my shirt and the next words out of her mouth was” how did my earring get on your shirt?” I told her I had found it in the dust and had put it on my shirt. I told Megan I didn’t think look for the owner of the earring because what are the chances of finding the owner of a lost earring and she replied Pretty good I would say. I felt a little like price giving Cinderella her glass slipper although there was no wedding vows exchanged I guess that only happens in the fairy tails right? I loved Pickathon and will return every year, I have been to may festivals and music events all over the Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Texas and California and Pickathon is by far my favorite I loved every band I saw talked to most of them and even got my picture made with a few. Made friends with all the food venders and the shower people, Square danced, pet horses, had people come up to me and say “I have seen you seen you so much this weekend I feel like I know you” saw a girl hula hoping while talking on a cell phone. And laughed danced ate played slept in the woods in tent with the sound of music coming from every direction and the smile on my face wont be going away anytime soon That I’m sure of and did I mention I say a guitar made from a BBQ a Bass guitar made from a wheelbarrow and a dobro made from a red rider wagon. I love and miss Pickathon Ken Lamb

O.k. I'm on my way to fill up my water jug and hit the bathroom down by the beer garden and I hear a fiddle. Outside the Galaxy Barn sittin on an upturned boat named Bill's Barge is Frank Fairfield and "Tater Tot" (the 17 yr old fiddle player from the larry gillis band). I stopped and sat for the next hour and a half or so and watched some of the best old time music i have ever seen happen right there. they were trading songs and talking about old music and playing some of my favorite tunes, "boil them cabbage down" is one that stands out. mind blowin! thanks to two of my new favorite musicians for the beautiful moment and to all the pick-a-thon family for the best one yet.

I'm back at work and still whirling from the off-the-charts energy and glowy goodness that magically vibrates from Pendarvis Farm! There is nothing like the Pendarvis family, friends and the Pickathon...the love, the sweat, the laughter, the hugs, the smell of the grass, the woods, it's a multi-vitamin of joy! Smiles and inner cartwheels, April W.

4 AM. Billowing breezes creep in from the east. Overhead, white diamonds cast a laser dance among the stars. The flags rise and fall with the breeze. In my heart, I am beyond content as I know sunday's music awaits me.

Hula hoop girls. Lightning fast banjos. Black feet. Dusty paths. The brilliant musicians inside the woods... the ones who won't ever get to the main stage. The brilliant sound guys balancing every little db. And oh, those long morning walks to the portaloos. Pickathon is like a fantasy music camp.

We camped with our three kids (6, 3 and 7 months old) and friends with their three kids. Despite the heat in the middle of the day... a quick trip to the Clackamas River helped a bit... we loved every minute spent in the magical world of Pickathon. The food! The music! The chill, frindly, local vibe. We're making it an annual tradition. Thank you!

I'll definitely be staying the entire weekend next year. Any idea of the dates yet?

2009-08-07 12:14:45

This was the first Pickathon I had ever been to, but most certainly will not be my last. The feeling of family, cooperation, and art are so visibly and audibly woven into the Pickathon experience that I feel, even today, a week later,a tinge of remorse that it didn't last longer. I loved every band that I saw and heard. The days were hot, but unlike hot days in the city where peoples' patience are taxed, at Pickathon everyone was smiling and having a great time. Every night I would lay my head on my pillow and drift off to sleep with the sound of sweet strings floating above and through me. This was a wonderful experience and I look forward to many more like these, in the years to come. You can tell a lot of love and thought for the Earth goes into making this event, and I think that is why it out shines so many other festivals that I have been to. To all of you that put in such long hard days to make this a success, you did a truely outstanding job ~ thank you. I would like to be a part of that next year and volunteer my time and energy and give what so many others gave. Pickathon is a blessing. I can't wait for next summer!

It's my third year at Pickathon and in spite of the heat this one was just as great! We found our own personal nirvana behind the Deschutes Brewery keg as we huddles close to the reefer truck to feel some of the cold air waft out! We enjoyed all the music and yummy food and yes, even the black feet! We particularly enjoyed the Oasis showers (that minty soap definitely felt good in places I didn't imagine it would!). The only downside was coming out of the shower on Saturday night at midnight and realizing that my friend's sandals had been taken! We thought it might be an honest mistake but as several pairs went missing over the next day we think it might not have been... what a shame to do in such a great festival! Another great job! Thanks for all the hard work you put in! We're looking forward already to next year!

Best three days of the year! My fondest memories are playing Johnny Cash songs for the late nighters out at the woods stage. Welling up with tears because Pancake Breakfast made me so happy! Huddling over the schedule with my Pickathon partner, racing frantically from stage to stage to be blown away over and over again by the incredible talent. Thank you so so so much.

Pickathon is a Northwest treasure. I personally hope it stays as much as is: with a lineup to match any festival, but a funky DIY vibe and sense of community that can't be found on this scale. My 8 year old son and I worked backstage with the bands and a fellow volunteer woman named Johnny. What fun. After my first year, I knew I wanted to come back; after my second, I'm committed. Thanks so much to Michael, Zale and the organizers + the Pendarvis family for supporting the best fest around.

I just wanted to extend a huge *thanks* to everyone who supports our cause and gives so much postive feedback to our group, Harmony Event Medicine. This year was our 5th Pick and we just aboslutely love the sweat and tears we put into the darn thing. Big thanks to Terry and Zale, for without thier whole support we couldnt have ever done this wonderful event. Please please keep having us come back. It really has become our favorite event. Looking forward to more, Jeff of HEM

Wow! Thanks for all the great feedback and thanks to al those who came to be wowe and all those who volunteered. Im not sure if i should apologize, but i am glad that matt@duoartanddesignenjoyed the Jam and Jelly joke - i guess thats my fault for bringing it from KY - glad you enjoyed it as its not a "flavor" for all to enjoy! (also, i'd be curious to know where/what context you heard it?). Anyway, Pickathon 2010! TWENTY-TEN - expect big things in small sustainable packages!! Looking forward!

OH! I almost forgot to ADD to the Blitzen Trapper/Marty fiasco..as the search drew perilous, 2 of rock and rolls' best offered there services from backstage. Not only did Gang of Four's bassist Dave Allen offer to fill in, but so to did Travis Good of the Sadies - the tall one - whom I had the pleasure of talking with (well, drinking beer really) whom upon hearing of the mishap bee-lined for the stage to fill in. As the same moment I led blocked for him thru the backstage crowd, Marty walked on stage - classic moment I wont soon forget. BUT the real point is that the spirit and generousity of the musicians who played this year and their willingness to do such things for Pickathon. Every musician I had the fortune to talk to where all cool as hell, open, and super grateful in their praise for this event. THANKS!

Hey there mriegert@gmail.com ... I heard the J & J joke twice that night. Once before the Trapper barn show at the food booth I was working. One of the others vendors I was with heard it and retold it to us. Then I heard a woman tell it on stage as we were waiting for Marty to show and they were desperately looking for someone to entertain the hungry crowd. I believe she was in one of the bands, but can't recall the name because I missed her act. So you are the genesis of said joke?? Hilarious!

Another serendipitous story of meeting someone again... I had talked with John Doe in the Workshop barn, and of course was enchanted. Saw him a little later with his crew of friends elsewhere. The next day back in the workshop barn I saw the crew again and someone I thought was John and started talking to him about our conversation the previous day. This guy just nodded politely, and said yup, then he stepped out and took a phone call. Later that night when John was on stage with the Sadies in the Galaxy Barn, I saw the other guy off to the side of the stage and realized my mistake, and sheepishly offered my apologies. As it turned out we had met some time ago briefly, share a lot of mutual friends in Portland, had a good laugh over it all, and have since become friends :).

2009-08-30 12:17:51

btw... the "other guy" looks so much like John Doe, that folks have taken to calling him Faux Doe.

I was hoping to see Whispering Pines on this years lineup :( Perfect band for this great event. Thier album "Family Tree" is amazing!

this was my second time making my way to the festival only this time we told others and so had the pleasure of hanging with good friends and bumping into faces we knew. the pickathon is my favourite music festival, great vibes, and the music never disappoints. one of the high lights was sitting in the woods to try to escape the heat waves. when horse feathers played they were so pretty they made us cry. vetiver was so unbelievably lovely and even though i have seen them so many times before, something about sitting on a bail of hey in a summer woodland setting with lots of happy people just made it all the more special. this year we have told a few more friends so it will be so nice to share the experience with them. such a special time and the portland people are so beautiful inside and out. this has become our new summer tradition.

Best memory of the 11th annual Pickathon was watching a cloud of dust rise in the moonlight as the entire camp square danced in a massive weave of hootin and hollerin. Terrific photos of everyone lined up in the grass creating the giant number 11 waiting for the plane overhead to snap an arial shot as the lovely staff sprayed down the gang with squirt bottles in that relentless Pony Boy Curtis STAY Gold HEAT. "every heart is a revolutionary cell" music music music

Regarding the very posponed Trapper show: If there are any Picka-staff still reading this I'll add two cents as a suggestion of how this could have been handled better. Tell the audience SOMETHING. Alls you had to do was say "One of the guys is missing and we're looking for him". Then people could decide if they want to wait or not. Instead we all just stood there for an hour thinking "Maybe the band is JUST ABOUT to come out?" That's the only reason the barn was restless. You couldn't ask for a more chill group of people but still, come on, tell them SOMETHING. Other than that, Pickathon was awesome as usual. Keep up the great work!

Loved the event as usual but would prefer more acoustic and less LOUD performances. I would prefer a more mellow event all around. there are more families every year, which is great. It's nice to sit near the main stage to watch the performers but then it's too loud for the kids. But thanks for all the hard work that went into this! And we'll be back next year.

Loved, loved this event. Won't miss it next year. My only gripe was that most of my friends got in free because they were "friends of the band". Even some youngers who were at the gate were allowed admittance even though their names were not on the guest list and they had no ID. After paying a slight fortune to attend (worth it!). It felt odd that I was one of the few who paid. Would love to volunteer next year so that I may become part of the grateful instead of part of the broke. Thanks again Pickathon for a wonderful time!!
